Pardee Homes

“Living Smart” Program

Background

In 2002, Public Policy Strategies helped launch Pardee Homes’ Living SmartTM program, which offers homebuyers a comprehensive package of state-of-the-art environmental, energy conservation and air quality upgrades to new homes. Living SmartTM created San Diego’s first “environmental” neighborhood – Santa Barbara - in the Pacific Highlands Ranch community.

Living SmartTM specifically refers to the inclusion of household items and building products designed to upgrade a home in the following key areas: Health Smart - enhanced indoor air and water quality; Energy Smart - reduced energy requirements resulting in lower utility bills; and Earth Smart - the preservation of precious environmental resources. Some of the options available to homebuyers in each area include: Health Smart - central vacuum system, air filtration system; Energy Smart - solar power, florescent lighting package, energy saving appliances; Earth Smart - engineered wood, carpet made from recycled soda bottles and tank-less water heaters.

Strategy

Working with Pardee and its consultants, PPS organized the community groundbreaking designed to call regional attention to the housing project. The event included a unique consortium of interests from the building and environmental communities coming together to praise the future of environmental housing.

PPS helped identify and brief elected officials and interest group participants; produced message points; marketing materials and generated event earned media coverage.
